Mrs. Rio received her Bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Science from the University of New Hampshire and her Master’s degree in clinical nutrition, a dietetic internship, and a Maternal and Child Health Trainingship in Developmental Disabilities and Inborn Errors of Metabolism from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Susan initially worked at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, New Hampshire, and then the University of Alabama in Birmingham providing coverage for both the Crippled Children’s Services Clinic and as a consultant for the Glenn Ireland Center. Mrs. Rio participated in diabetic camp, national and local nutrition conferences for pediatric and children with special health care needs, and supported the health component for Head start in several counties. Mrs. Rio worked for the Developmental Evaluation Center and Asheville Children’s Developmental Service Agency (CDSA) for over 13 years prior to joining FIPP in 2012. Mrs. Rio previously provided nutrition consultation and meal planning for the FIPP Early Head Start Program in Alexander, Burke, and Caldwell counties. Mrs. Rio has specialized expertise in assessing nutritional intake, identifying alternative food choices, and addressing food texture issue and food allergies. Susan has considerable experience supporting nutrition and growth of infants born prematurely.
